Set up your Google Business Profile in an afternoon

For local businesses, your Google Business Profile often matters as much as your website. It's free, and it's what shows up on Google Maps and in the box on the right of search results.

1. Claim or create your profile

Search for your business name on Google. If a profile exists, choose "Own this business?". If not, go to business.google.com and add it. Use your exact trading name, not extra keywords.

2. Choose the right category

Your main category is the most important setting. Pick the closest match to what you do, then add a few secondary categories for your other services.

3. Set your area and hours

If you visit customers, list your service areas instead of showing your home address. Keep your hours up to date, including public holidays.

4. Verify it

Google will ask you to verify, usually by video, phone or postcard. Your profile won't fully show until this is done.

5. Add photos and services

Upload real photos of your work, your team and your space. Add each service with a short description, and prices if you're comfortable sharing them.

6. Ask for reviews

Copy your review link from the profile and send it to happy customers after each job. A steady trickle of honest reviews beats a big burst.

7. Post now and then

A short update, offer or photo every few weeks shows Google and customers that you're active.
