How to choose colours and fonts for your brand
Your colours and fonts are often the first thing people notice. Here's a simple way to choose them with confidence.
Start with how you want people to feel
Write down three words for your brand, such as calm, bold or friendly. Every colour and font choice should support those words.
Pick one main colour
This is the colour people will remember. Then add one or two supporting colours and a light background colour. Four or five colours in total is plenty.
Check it's easy to read
Text needs strong contrast against its background, especially on phones in sunlight. Dark text on a light background is the safest choice for body text.
Use two fonts at most
One font for headings with personality, and one simple font for everything else. More than two usually looks busy.
Test it in real life
Look at your colours on a phone, printed on paper and on a sign mock up. Some colours change a lot between screen and print.
Write it down
Keep a one page guide with your colour codes and fonts, so everything you make looks like it belongs together.
